West Hill Wasps 0 v 0 Culm United (Plate Cup Final) (AET) (3-2 on pens)
| Saturday 10 May 2008 A nailbiting final from
beginning to end. West Hill started brightly and in the first
couple of minutes Hamish Culling was through on goal, only for
the keeper to make a good save.
Hamish again found himself 1:1 with a defender but was
fouled on the edge of the box as he looked to get in on goal.
Culm United settled better and began to pass the ball bettter
than West Hill. When they reached the final third however, they
met with excellent defending from Alex Light, Robert Mansfield
and Jesse Wilson, who restricted them to long-range efforts.
In the second half, the pattern continued. Culm United
were more composed on the ball but created very few chances.
West Hill always looked dangerous going forward. Zac Mattin hit
the post with a shot that had the keeper beaten. Chris Wright
made a fine run through the Culm midfield and in a 2 v 1
situation was brought down outside the area.
As time wore on, the supersized pitch and the heat took
their toll on the players. The game ended 0-0. There was little
to note in extra time and so we went down to penalties. Jamie
Hill, Chris Wright and Hamish Culling scored their penalties,
whilst Rabbie Hansford saved three of the efforts by Culm.
A close game, competitive but fair game, as always with
Culm. On balance, the Wasps deserved their win for the chances
they created. |
Topsham Town 0 v 2 West Hill Wasps
| Tuesday 6 May 2008 West Hill took an early lead
when Hamish Culling controlled the ball in the box, lifted in
over and around a defender and fired the ball past the Topsham
keeper. Jamie Hill nearly added a second towards the end of the
half with a fierce drive from outside the box that hit the post.
Into the second half and chances continued to fall to the
Wasps, with the Topsham Town keeper making some excellent saves.
Topsham Town kept battling away and with only a goal in it, were
looking to get an equaliser. West Hill eventually got a second
goal to kill the tie. Hamish Culling latched on to a pass near
the half way, knocked the ball round a defender and sent a shot
from 20 yards screaming towards the goal. The keeper got a hand
to it but could only parry it into the net. |
West
Hill Wasps 1 v 2 Tiverton Town
| Saturday 3 May 2008 West Hill took an early lead
when a back pass by a defender fell short and Jesse Wilson
knocked the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.
Tiverton kept their cool and played some excellent pass and move
football. They were a pleasure to watch. They dominated
possession and deservedly equalised with the last kick of the
first half.
In the first minute of the second half, Tiverton took the lead
in fortunate circumstances when a clearance rebounded off the
knees of an attacker and flew into the net.
West Hill kept battling away and had the odd chance to equalise
but the Tiverton goalkeeper was solid.
Hats off to Tiverton who broke our season-long unbeaten home
League record and congratulations to them on winning the League.
West Hill Man of the Match was Robert Mansfield who was superb
in defence and thwarted most Tiverton attacks. |
West Hill
Wasps 1 v 0 Heavitree
| Saturday 26 April 2008 A close match from the
first to the final whistle. Heavitree marginally had the greater
possession in the first half but were denied shots on goal by
superb defending by the Wasps. Despite having less of the ball,
West Hill used it better and created the better chances. The
breakthrough however came when West Hill were defending. Zac
Mattin intercepted a ball inside his own penalty area and then
set off like a gazelle, beating several players before slotting
the ball home past the onrushing goalkeeper.
Into the second half, and Heavitree began to pass the ball
better. Their attack was also starting to have a little more
success getting past the West Hill defence. Hamish Culling in
goal was having the game of his life and pulled off several good
saves. Heavitree looked to have equalised when a fierce drive
dipped onto the crossbar, with Hamish, for once, beaten.
West Hill nearly added to their lead, hitting the post in
one attack and then denied when Zac Mattin was again through on
goal, but this time his shot was saved by the Heavitree
goalkeeper. Heavitree piled on the pressure at the end but a
succession of corners was successfully defended by West Hill.
Hamish Culling was superb in goal, Robert Mansfield was
again solid and consistent in defence, Zac Mattin played another
blinder and scored what must be the Goal of the Season for the
whole league, but the Man of the Match went to a player who has
shown true grit and determination throughout the whole season,
as well as today, Chris Wright. |
Exwick
Youth 5 v 0 West Hill Wasps
| Wednesday 23 April 2008 A beautiful, sunny
Spring evening. The match began scrappily and never got any
better. The 2-3" length of the grass on the pitch made passing a
non-event. The Wasps had the better chances in the first half
but nothing to shout home about.
Exwick scored in the first minute of the second half and
their confidence soared in equal proportion to the drop in
morale for West Hill. As West Hill pushed defenders forward to
get an equaliser, in went the second. Exwick then seemed to be
able to score from every attack and pretty much every other shot
they had ended up in the back of the net. The Wasps kept
battling away up front and were unlucky not to get even a
consolation goal.
Congratulations to Exwick on their victory A lacklustre
display from most of the Wasps and definitely a match to forget
from our point of view. |
West
Hill Wasps 3 v 0 Phoenix Club
| Saturday 19 April 2008 Biting cold and incessant
rain greeted both teams on this Spring day. West Hill took an
early lead when Hamish Culling was put through by a long throw
from Robert Mansfield and cooly slotted home. Moments later,
another throw-in and this time it was Chris Wright who got on to
the ball and fired home.
Phoenix, far from put out by the start, played good
football and had a spell where they pinned West Hill back. A
succession of corners was successfully defended by West Hill and
somewhat against the run of play, Culling added his second with
a header following a corner from Zac Mattin.
Phoenix came out flying in the second half and again had
spells where they dominated possession. For their part, West
Hill counter-attacked well and continued to create chances.
Phoenix battled away until the final whistle and even had a shot
kicked off the line with the goalie beaten. In the end, the
difference between the two sides was the West Hill defence who
were miserly at best in giving the opposition shooting
opportunities.
The West Hill Man of the Match was Jesse Wilson, who put
in another great performance in right midfield. This was a great
match to watch and a lot closer than the final scoreline
suggests. |
West Hill Wasps 3 v 0 Ottery St. Mary
| Saturday 5 April 2008 A sunny spring morning set
the scene for excellent footballing conditions. At last, no
downpour to endure! Both teams were up for this local derby,
even more so as the result would count double following the
postponement of the game at Ottery earlier in the season.
Neither side established any sign of dominance in the
opening 10 minutes or so, but gradually as the game went on, it
was West Hill who were putting the better moves together. Ottery
were strong at the back and Jack in particular was almost
singlehandledly keeping the Wasps at bay. Eventually, the goal
came, finished by Chris Wright who showed his usual
determination to win the ball.
Ottery continued to battle away and kept the game close.
Perhaps a decisive moment in the game came when Zac Mattin was
fouled inside the box towards the end of the first half. He
dispatched the penalty with confidence.
The second half started off close once again, but the game
was decided when a corner by Rabbie Hansford was unfortunately
deflected off an Ottery player for an own goal. As Ottery sought
a goal, playing three strikers, West Hill had several
counter-attacking opportunities where the Wasps outnumbered the
defence. It was one of those days when the killer pass was just
a yard too short or too long and few goal chances came as a result.
Overall, a great game to watch for everyone involved. The
West Hill Man of the Match was Robert Mansfield who was, as he
has been all season, solid as a rock in defence. |
West
Hill Wasps 6 v 1 Topsham Town
| Saturday 29 March 2008 West Hill put together
some excellent passing moves at the beginning of the game and
established a two goal lead with strikes from Hamish Culling and
Chris Wright. The latter added another midway through the half
and Topsham then pulled a goal back. Culling added another to
make it 4-1 at half-time.
By this stage, the heavens had opened and the game became
something of a mudbath. Into the second half and Chris Wright
bagged his hat-trick. Hamish Culling almost did the same, but
for an excellent save from a penalty kick by the Topsham keeper.
Unfortunately for him, he only managed to turn the ball on to
the post. As the ball trickled along the goal line, Zac Mattin
was first to pounce and prod the ball into the net.
Topsham kept battling away and never gave up. Both teams
should be applauded for the way they kept going in such
inclement weather. The West Hill Man of the Match was Hamish
Culling who had a superb game, passing, dribbling and scoring.

Competition Semi-Final
Alphington 2 v 2 West Hill Wasps (3-3 after extra
time, 2-3 on penalties)
| Saturday 22 March 2008 This game had just about everything. It was a real
nail biter, with both teams looking anxious in the opening
exchanges. West Hill had the better of what little there was and
deservedly took the lead. Chris Wright beat several players but
his shot bounced off the Alpha's GK's legs. A goalmouth scramble
ensued and was ended when Rabbie Hansford prodded the ball home.
The swirling, gusting strong winds made decent football
very difficult for both teams.
Alphington then settled their nerves and tried to play some passing
football. The Wasps defence played really well and Alphington
were forced to shoot from distance. For their part, the
Alphington defence was also playing well and West Hill also
failed to create many chances.
Into the second half, and Alphington began to dominate the
match, with West Hill defending well, but struggling to get
anything going in midfield or attack. The pressure from the
Alphas paid off when a midfielder intercepted a goal kick and on
the half volley shot from distance. The ball looped over the
goalie and dipped just under the bar. It was a brilliant goal.
West Hill began to get some success moving the ball and
took the lead when Hamish Culling sent a free kick, curling and
dipping into the top corner of the net. Goal of the season
stuff.
The Alphas piled on the pressure and West Hill were
fortunate to keep them out with some goalmouth scrambles and a
superb fingertips save from Chris Wright. Time was now up by
several minutes at least, but the referee carried on playing.
Alphington piled everyone forward, including the goalkeeper and
from another goalmouth scramble equalised. With 36 minutes
played, the referee then blew for time.
Alphington took the lead 3-2 when a free-kick was
deflected off a defender. West Hill kept plugging away but the
Alphas were dogged in defending and West Hill did not really
look like scoring. Until they did. A corner by James Powley
was heading dangerously towards the Alpha goal when the keeper
came out to catch. He misjudged the ball, it went just over his
hands and hit an Alphington defender to fall into the net. 3-3.
Extra time ended without either side creating any more chances.
Hamish Culling saved the first Alphington penalty and all
other 5 penalty takers scored theirs, the West Hill penalties
coming from Hamish Culling, Chris Wright and Jamie Hill. It was
a shame to end such a good match by penalties. On the day, both
teams put everything into the match and Alphington will feel
with some reason that they played the best football on the day,
although the windy conditions made that a rarity for both teams.
West Hill Man of the Match was Zac Mattin who competed well
all day and was one of the strongest runners at the end of extra
time. |
Plate Competition
West Exe Athletic 0 v 1 West Hill Wasps
Tedburn St. Mary 1 v 1 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 8 March West Exe and West Hill drew a
league game against each other recently and for most of the 30
minutes, it looked like neither team would be able to break the
deadlock. Both teams competed well, but the small pitch
restricted the space available and there were few chances at
either end. When there were, defences were strong and kept out
shots. Both goalkeepers were also solid. The best chance of the
first half saw James Powley fire in an excellent shot from way
outside the box. It looked to be curling into the top corner,
but the West Exe goalie just about got a hand to the ball and
pushed it over the bar.
Towards the end of the game, a fierce strike by
Chris Wright was excellently saved by the West Exe goalie but
the ball rebounded straight to the oncoming Jesse Wilson who
slotted home. West Exe will see themselves as unfortunate to
have lost a close game.
West Hill started brightly and created several good
chances early on. Zac Mattin was clear through after a great
one-two with Chris Wright. He kept his shot low and on target
but was thwarted by a superb save by the Tedburn keeper. Midway
through the half, a sublime passing play from the Wasps broke
the deadlock. Robert Mansfield intercepted the ball in defence
and took his time on the ball, finding Hamish Culling down the
left. Hamish hurtled down the line and sent in a low cross right
on to the left foot of Zac Mattin who thumped the ball in from 6
yards out.
Tedburn came out firing on all cylinders in the second
half and pushed the Wasps back. The pressure eventually paid off
when Tedburn equalised after the Wasps failed to clear the ball
several times.
The West Hill Man of the Match for his all round play, but
especially his ability to challenge and win the ball in midfield
was Jamie Hill.
The Wasps progress to the semi-finals, leading the group
table with 4 points, West Exe 3 points and Tedburn 1 point.
|
Crediton Saints 2 v 4 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 1 March 2008 Crediton started brightly
and had West Hill pinned back in their own half for the first
five minutes. West Hill began to get back into the game a bit
more and Zac Mattin in particular was having considerable
success down the left wing. Against the run of play, West Hill
took the lead when a through ball found Edward Treneer-Salisbury
unmarked in front of goal. He shot on the stretch with his left
foot to score his first ever goal for the Wasps.
Crediton continued to battle away and justly got an
equaliser after a defensive mix up, which saw a cross bypass the
whole defence and land at the feet of an attacker who cooly slotted
home. Crediton now gained the upper hand in possession and
this was reflected when they took the lead with a good move
which was finished off emphatically with a volley on the far
post.
Into the second half, and the Wasps came out in a much
more determined mood, beginning to spread the passes around far
better than they had earlier. Zac Mattin won the ball in the
box, passed a defender and crossed right into the path of Rabbie
Hansford, who stabbed the ball home. The match was now in the
balance and was swung by an unfortunate error from the Saints
keeper. A harmless looking shot by Chris Wright was heading
towards the Crediton goal. The keeper decided to kick and missed
the ball. Within a minute, the Wasps sealed the win. Another
fine driving run down the left by Zac Mattin. His cross went too
far, but was superbly kept in play by Hamish Culling. His cross
found Chris Wright who sent in a fierce drive for his second
goal on the day.
Despite the blustery weather, both teams did well to play
good football in a match that was fairly contested and well
reffed.
Wasps MOM on the day was Edward Treneer-Salisbury. |
West Exe 1
v 1 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 16 February 2008 Both teams competed
well for the full 60 minutes, but creative play was limited for
both teams due to an undersized pitch. Generally, there was
little space to be had for either team and players were more
often than not crowded out when they received the ball.
One exception to this state of play was when the ball fell into
the path of a West Exe defender who shot from way outside the
box. The moment he hit it, it looked like a goal, but Wasps
keeper pulled off a “save of the season” to tip the ball over
the bar.
West Hill took the lead mid-way through the first half
when Rabbie Hansford latched on to a pass and fired low into the
corner. To their credit, West Exe kept pushing for an equaliser.
The Wasps defence was strong and prevented West Exe getting a
shot in at all. With 5 minutes to go, a West Exe corner fell to
an attacker on the edge of the box. His shot was well saved by
Hamish Culling but the ball fell straight to another West Exe
player and he was first to react.
Hamish Culling came out of goal for the final few minutes
and twice produced good saves from the opposite goalie.
All in all, a draw was a fair result. The match was played
in a good spirit and was well refereed. The West Hill Man of the
Match was Rabbie Hansford, who played in a variety of positions
and was the best player on the day for bringing the ball down
and getting passing moves going. |
West Hill
Wasps 5 v 0 Feniton
| Saturday 9 February 2008 In perfect playing
conditions for football, spectators enjoyed a friendly match
played in a good spirit throughout.
West Hill dominated the match overall, but Feniton always
kept going and got stronger as the match went on. West Hill
opened the scoring with a top right-hand corner finish from
Jamie Hill, firing in from the edge of the box. Chris Wright and
Robert Mansfield added further goals before half-time. Feniton
defended well and their goalkeeper in particular pulled off many
excellent saves. Being a
friendly, it was a perfect opportunity to develop the skills of
the players in different positions and most of the Wasps team
found themselves in an unfamiliar part of the pitch for most of
the match. Hamish Culling scored two second half goals to seal
the victory. Feniton were unlucky not to score late on when a
lob nearly looped over Jesse Wilson, but he managed to keep the
ball out at the last second.
The West Hill Man of the Match was Jesse Wilson, our
recent arrival, who played well in right midfield, right back
and goal. |
West
Hill Wasps 2 v 1 St Martins
| Saturday 2 February 2008
Since U8s, games between the
two sides have always been close, fairly contested and
entertaining. Today was no exception.
St Martins started brightly and had the better of the
opening five minutes. West Hill gradually then began to get into
the match and get some passing going. As the half progressed, it
was the Wasps who were having the better of the attacking play
and this was rewarded when Chris Wright scored from a corner.
Stoke Hill began the second half strongly but were
thwarted by some excellent defending by Robert Mansfield at
centre half and Hamish Culling in goal, whose handling
throughout the match was superb.
The game was in the balance and the next goal was likely
to be decisive. Having been denied moments earlier by a fine
save from the Saints goalie, Zac Mattin sent in a wonderful
dipping shot that beat the keeper but came back off the bar.
Chris Wright was first to react and knocked the ball home to
make it 2-0.
To their credit, St Martins did not give up and to their
manager's credit, he pushed extra men into attack in an
attempt to get back into the game. Their efforts paid off when
Myles scored a goal after beating two men on the edge of the
West Hill box. Sadly for the Saints, there was not enough time
to get the equaliser. A close game, but one the Wasps just about
deserved to win.
West Hill Man of the Match was James Powley, our right
winger, who passed the ball well today and battled away to get
the ball. |
Stoke
Hill 1 v 1 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 26 January 2008 The first half was a
good contest, both teams passing the ball well and battling for
possession all over the pitch. Both defences were also strong,
so chances were few and far between. Nonetheless, Stoke Hill
overall had the upper hand and deserved their half-time lead of
1-0.
West Hill equalised early in the second half when Hamish
Culling was found in the open with a good pass. He kept his cool
and took the ball all the way to the goal and slotted home.
An off-the-ball incident in which a Stoke Hill player
kicked a West Hill player whilst they were both on the ground
changed the mood and the balance of the match. The West Hill
player was injured and did not return to the field. With no
subs, West Hill were down to 8 men. The offence went unpunished
so Stoke Hill continued with 9. This put West Hill very much on
the defence, but they held out well, despite the referee playing
40 minutes in the second half and awarding Stoke Hill an
indirect free kick in the penalty area when the West Hill
goalkeeper, trying to take a quick goal kick, hit the ball
whilst it was moving.
Aaron Samuel, playing at left back, was the West Hill Man
of the Match for his superb defending throughout the game.
|
Brixington 1 v 0 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 19 January 2008 Brixington dominated at the start
of the match, controlling the ball, making space, finding
passes. West Hill huffed and puffed but were second to most
balls. After 10 minutes, Brixington took the lead with a fine
individual goal from their centre forward. West Hill had a
couple of half chances but Brixington had a strong centre half
Josh who managed to put in a saving tackle before the shot was
launched. Towards the end of the half, Brixington hit the post
and deserved their half-time lead.
As the second half started, possession was more 50/50. As the
half progressed, West Hill had the better of possession, but
without dominating the play. No less than four good chances
opened up. On a different day, at least two of these would have
gone in, but such is life, it didn't happen on the day. A draw
would have been a fairer result, but congratulations to
Brixington.
The game was contested fairly by both teams and well refereed
by Dave from Brixington.
The West Hill MOM was Zac Mattin who was all over the pitch
for the 60 minutes. |
Heavitree 2 v 1 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 5 January 2008 Heavitree had the best
of the opening exchanges and forced a series of corners, but the
West Hill defence were their usual solid selves, such that the
home side were not able to get a shot on goal. The visitors' had
a depleted squad, without their usual striker, and perhaps
because of a lack of football over the festive period, struggled
to get their usual passing game going.
The pressure by Heavitree eventually paid off when a
corner was not fully cleared and a home player fired in from the
edge of the box. West Hill then put a fine move together which
saw Chris Wright through on goal, only to be thwarted by a fine
block by the goalie, who was off his line quickly.
In the second half, the pattern of play remained pretty
much the same, with Heavitree dominating possession.
Nonetheless, the Wasps were beginning to get a few moves going.
Against the run of play, Zac Mattin scored a wonder goal.
Intercepting the ball on the half way line, he beat 2 players,
took the ball all the way and his deflected shot looped over the
goalie for an equaliser.
The game was now much more even, but the Wasps then went
down to 8 men following an injury. Heavitree capitalised and
made it 2-1. West Hill sent their central defender up front in
an attempt to grab an equaliser, but Heavitree defended well
when the Wasps were able to get forward.
It was great to see both teams competing 100% till the
final whistle. The home appointed referee was excellent. On
balance, a deserved win for Heavitree. Wasps Man of the Match
was Alex Light who defended well throughout the game.

West
Hill Wasps 3 v 3 Exwick Youth
| Saturday 15 December 2007 The first half saw
competitive and fair challenging throughout but neither team
really settled and started passing the ball. West Hill had only
eight players and had a couple of good chances to take the lead
themselves, but eventually the extra man advantage saw Exwick
take the lead with a fine move, with the ball threaded through
the Wasps defence right into the path of the right winger who
slotted home. Exwick grew in confidence and almost scored again
within minutes, thwarted by an exceptional reaction save from
Rabbie Hansford, the West Hill goalie.
A late arrival saw West Hill restored to a full team at
half time and the play became more balanced. Against the run of
play, a high ball into the West Hill goal was missed by the
keeper, went over his head and presented Exwick with a tap in to
make it 2-0 for the visitors.
West Hill never gave up and a fine passing move saw Hamish
Culling pull the game back to 2-1. For a couple of minutes,
Exwick struggled to clear the ball and it looked like the Wasps
would score with every attack. West Hill paid the price for
having too many midfielders attacking and Exwick scored another
goal on the break, again well taken by the right winger.
With only 10 or so minutes left, West Hill were looking at
their first home league defeat of the season. Suddenly, they
were first to every ball. Robert Mansfield won the ball in
defence, played it to Chris Wright, and continued with an
overlapping run down the left wing. Exwick had only one defender
back versus three attackers. Chris chose his moment well and
found Hamish Culling with an accurate pass and we were back to
one goal in it - 3-2 to Exwick. The Wasps now piled forward,
leaving defence almost unguarded. A cross from the right from
Robert Mansfield found Jamie Hill all by himself at the far post
and he drilled the ball back across the keeper into the net.
A thrilling match to watch for everyone concerned. West
Hill MOM was Rabbie Hansford who made several exceptional saves
throughout the game. |
Phoenix Club 1 v 3 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 1 December 2007 West Hill scored in the
first minute following a flowing move which sliced through the
Phoenix midfield and defence, finished off with a shot by Jamie
Hill. Phoenix came right back on the attack and had several long
range efforts. Eventually, it paid off. A shot from outside the
area bounced just in front of the keeper and he spilled the
ball. Phoenix were the first to react and got their equaliser.
Within minutes, the Wasps took the lead again, following
another great move with passing between James Powley, Jamie
Hill, Zac Mattin and Hamish Culling. This time, Chris Wright put
the ball away. Within a couple of minutes, it was Chris who
intercepted an attempted clearance and passed the ball to Hamish
Culling who made it 3-1 with a fierce drive from outside the
box.
In the second half, Phoenix pressed and pressed to get
back in the game, but the West Hill defence was solid and kept
Phoenix to long range shots most of the time. The Wasps had
further chances on the break - Rabbie Hansford nearly added
another when he was through on goal. Chris Wright, the West Hill
Man of the Match for his sheer determination and his excellent
skill in tackling and passing the ball, hit the post with
another fine effort towards the end.
The match was played fairly and competitively throughout
and the home referee did a fine job, encouraging players of both
teams during the game. |
Tedburn St. Mary 0 v 1 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 24 November 2007 The game was fairly,
competitively and evenly contested. There was plenty of effort
from both teams, but that ultimately could not disguise a
scrappy match of football that only had pockets of good play.
The conditions did not help. It was cold, the ground
barely thawed out. The grass was just that bit too long,
especially on the wings. The pitch was tiny for this age group.
So, when a passing play began to show some promise, the lack of
space meant it was all too often crowded out by the volume of
players. Not to take anything away from the two defences, who
both played really well.
The main threat from both teams came from set pieces,
which in this game amounted to corners. Tedburn had a player who
was able to repeatedly and accurately send in a dangerous left
footed inswinging corner that always looked likely to yield a
knock in. James Powley for the Wasps did the same with his
outswinger and Hamish Culling twice had headers that were close.
It was always going to take an individual effort to break
the deadlock. With only 5 minutes left, Zac Mattin pounced on a
clearance, skipped around a defender and sent a fierce daisy
cutter with his left foot into the bottom corner of the Tedburn
net. Sometimes your luck is in and sometimes it ain't. A draw
would have been a fairer result as, on balance, neither team
really did enough to justify taking home the bacon. The Tedburn
goalkeeper in particular played really well throughout, so must
have been disappointed to lose in the final moments.
The home referee was excellent, as was the hospitality
laid on by Tedburn. The kids especially appreciated the heated
dressing room at half-time.
Man of the Match for the Wasps was Hamish Culling who went
close several times, held the ball well up in attack and sprayed
some great passes out to the wings. |
West Hill Wasps 1 v 3 Stoke Hill (CUP MATCH)
| Saturday 10 November 2007 You could tell this
was a Cup match from the first whistle, with both teams
competing for the ball like their lives depended on it. Once the
frantic opening flurry subsided and the game began to settle
down, both teams began to pass the ball more but both defences
were solid and chances were restricted to long-range efforts
that troubled neither goalkeeper.
Stoke Hill took the lead when they capitalised on a poor
clearance by the Wasps. Equality was restored when Chris Wright
showed his usual determination in battling for the ball
following a corner. The ball had initially fallen to Jamie Hill
on the edge of the box. His shot was blocked but Chris was first
on the ball and after several attempts to get a shot in, he
finally succeeded.
The second half saw possession shared 50-50 between the
teams. A decisive moment in the match came when the Stoke Hill
keeper brought down Chris Wright inside the box after a flowing
move by West Hill. The keeper then redeemed himself with a great
save from the penalty that followed.
As often happens in these situations, the balance of
confidence swung Stoke Hill's way. Within minutes they had
scored a second to take the lead. With no more than 10 minutes
remaining, the Wasps sent an extra player from defence into
attack in a gamble to get back into the game. Stoke Hill then
added a third goal. Even then, the Wasps had chances to score.
Hamish Culling moved from goalkeeper to attack and immediately
had a chance to pull one back. The Stoke Hill keeper earned
himself Man of the Match with the save that followed. Moments
later and Hamish had another chance, this time beating the
keeper, only to see the ball rebound back off the post and into
the goalie's arms.
Another great game to watch for all those present. On
balance, Stoke Hill just about deserved their win and we wish
them well in the rest of the Cup for this season. |
Culm
United 5 v 1 West Hill Wasps
| Saturday 27 October 2007 Culm had the better of
the opening exchanges but neither side created any chances as
both defences were solid. Against the run of play, West Hill
scored from a free-kick. From about 20 yards, James Powley fired
his shot goalwards. A defender got a slight touch on the ball
with his head, but the power in the shot prevented him changing
the course of the shot.
Culm began to dominate the possession of the ball, but now
were creating some half chances, all of which were comfortably
saved by the Wasps' keeper, Hamish Culling. Five minutes before
half-time, Culm grabbed their deserved equaliser. A low shot
from inside the box took a slight but nevertheless decisive
deflection to send the ball into the corner of the West Hill
net.
Culm continued to dominate possession in the second half
and increasingly were creating good chances. Rabbie Hansford
pulled off a fine blocking save from the right winger and there
were one or two other near misses. With 15 minutes to go, we
were looking at a very one-sided score draw. The West Hill
defence were robust in their tackling. Culm then found their
second goal when a pass through the defence found a forward who
was unmarked in front of goal and he took his chance well.
It looked like Culm might now increase their lead further,
but West Hill were clinging on and then had a five minute spell
of their own and came close to scoring on two occasions. On the
break from a free-kick, Culm made it 3-1 with eight minutes to
go. With five minutes to go, the score was 5-1. The confidence
of the Culm team increased in direct proportion to the drop in
West Hill's belief and Culm looked able to score with every
attack at that point.
All credit to Culm - they passed and moved well all over
the park and thoroughly deserved their victory. 5-1 was a
flattering scoreline though and does not reflect the match
overall.
The game was played in a fair and competitive spirit by all and
was excellently refereed.
West Hill Man of the Match for his first half midfield
battling and some great saves as goalie in the second half was
Rabbie Hansford. |
West Hill Wasps 2 v 1 Crediton Saints
| Saturday 20 October 2006 Crediton started the
brighter team and had most of the early possession. They could
not however penetrate the resolute Wasps defence and most of
their chances were restricted to long-range efforts. Against the
run of play, West Hill created several chances on the break and
nearly took the lead when Louis Price was through on goal with
only the keeper to beat. The Crediton keeper stayed on his feet
well and forced the ball wide.
Crediton opened the scoring when West Hill failed to clear
a corner and a Saint fired in from close range.
As the second half began, West Hill began to get more
possession on the ball and looked increasingly dangerous on the
attack. The Saints defence battled well and always managed just
to get a foot in to stop goal attempts. The equaliser came when
a long throw-in by Robert Mansfield found Jamie Hill narrowing
down towards the Crediton goal. He crossed the ball and it was
deflected in the net by a Saints defender running towards his
goal. A very unfortunate own goal for the player involved who
could not get out of the way of the ball, but on balance the
equaliser was just reward for the efforts West Hill had put in.
The game continued to be evenly contested by all players,
with both teams putting in maximum effort to win the ball. The
decisive goal came when a long clearance was seized upon by
Hamish Culling who was lightning fast on to the ball. His low
cross fell straight to the feet of Chris Wright who steered the
ball in from six yards out. A great flowing move and just reward
for Chris Wright who was again exemplary in both skill and
effort throughout the game.
Crediton continued to pile forwards to find an equaliser
and on several occasions came close to drawing level. The West
Hill defence were under intense pressure for the last ten
minutes of the game, but held firm.
Another really great game to watch, close from beginning
to end, competitively and fairly played. The West Hill Man of
the Match, for the consistency of his defending in both this
game and throughout the season, was Robert Mansfield. |
West Hill
Wasps 2 v 0 West Exe
| Saturday 6 October 2007 The game was played in
unusually hot sunny conditions. West Hill had the best of the
opening exchanges but were thwarted by some excellent defending
and goalkeeping. a succession of corners eventually paid off,
with Chris Wright putting the ball in the net after a couple of
efforts rebounded.
The West Hill defence were at their strongest and made it
difficult for West Exe to build any attacks. Into the second
half, the Wasps nearly added a second as a header by Chris
Wright went narrowly wide. Hamish Culling made it 2-0 with a
well placed header following another superbly delivered corner
from James Powley.
West Exe did not give up and towards the end of the match,
they had periods of possession and pinned West Hill back in
their own area with a succession of throw-ins. West Hill held
firm to record their first clean sheet of the season.
Another great game for the players and the spectators. The
West Hill Man of the Match was Jamie Hill who had an excellent
game in midfield, winning tackles, bringing the ball down and
making lots of great passes to set up attacks. |
St Martins 3 v 1
West Hill Wasps
Saturday, 29 September 2007
St Martins were
immediately on the attack and hit the bar within the opening
seconds. West Hill then countered with a series of fine moves that
resulted in some excellent saves by the St Martins keeper or narrow
misses/goal line clearances.
The game
was end-to-end with St Martins repeatedly making successful sorties
down their left wing. The opener came from such a move - a series of
one-twos ending up in a good goal from close range.
St
Martins led 1-0 going into the second half, which saw similar
patterns of play. For the main, both teams were getting the ball
down, passing and finding space. Equally both defences were strong.
As West Hill pressed for an equaliser, St Martins scored on the
break, with attackers outnumbering defenders. For a brief moment,
West Hill lost confidence and St Martins scored a third.
West Hill then picked
themselves up and continued putting together good moves. Eventually,
Chris Wright pulled a goal back after another goalmouth scramble
which made the scoreline more respectable but didn't reflect the
balance of play between the two teams.
Games between these two
teams are always tight and this was no exception. Another great
advert for U11s football in the Exeter Friendly League.
The West Hill Man of
the Match was Louis Price, who defended extremely well at left-back. |
West Hill Wasps 1 v 1 Stoke Hill
Saturday, 22 September 2007
This was an evenly
contested game with excellent play from both teams.
West Hill had a chance
to go ahead when James Powley laid back a free-kick to Robert
Mansfield whose fierce drive hit the bar. This was the clearest
chance of the game so far, both sides being restricted to
half-chances due to excellent defending.
As the game
progressed, West Hill began to pass the ball more and, though
possession was even, it was the Wasps who were creating the better
chances. Eventually, West Hill took the lead midway through the
second half when Zac Mattin went on a run down the left wing,
beating his man and finding Hamish Culling who fired home with his
left foot. Within a minute, the game was nearly decided when a
brilliant succession of one-twos between James Powley and Hamish
Culling ended with a looping shot by Hamish which seemed bound for
the net. The Stoke Hill keeper not only pulled off a great save, but
was on his feet quickly to keep out the rebound. A minute later and
he saved superbly when Hamish Culling was again through on goal.
Stoke Hill never gave
up and started to mount some pressure on the Wasps goal. A couple of
shots were well saved by Rabbie Hansford and Stoke Hill were unlucky
not to equalise when a volley from a cross hit the post. With only a
couple of minutes to go, a shot-cum-cross was deflected by the Stoke
Hill left winger into the net.
The game was a credit
to both teams and kept both sets of spectators on their toes right
from beginning to end. It was a real pleasure to watch.
The West Hill Man
of the Match, for his excellent defending, was Edward
Treneer-Salisbury. |
West Hill Wasps 2 v 2 Brixington
Saturday, 15 September 2007
Brixington started brightly and
dominated the game early on. Eventually their pressure paid, with a
finely headed goal from a corner. West Hill briefly sprang to life
and a threaded pass from Chris Wright found Hamish Culling who
scored a peach of goal from about 20 yards, lifting the ball over
the goalkeeper into the top corner.
Brixington regained their
composure quickly and took the lead after a goalmouth scramble. At
the interval, Brixington thoroughly deserved their lead.
The second half saw the Wasps
gain more confidence and start to dominate in much the way
Brixington had in the first. The Brixington goalkeeper made several
good saves and West Hill hit the bar and the post a couple of times.
A succession of corners eventually ended up in a goal, with an
unfortunate own goal by a Brixington player. The match was now in
balance. West Hill continued to have a slight upper edge in passing
and chances, hitting the bar and the post again. Brixington had a
great chance on the break, a one-to-one on the goalkeeper, but
Rabbie Hansford pulled off a great save to keep the score level. In
the dying moments of the game, West Hill continued to search for
the winner, but Brixington held on. A really superb game, played
fairly and competitively by both teams. The whole team played really
well, but the West Hill Man of the Match, for his sheer
determination and his ability to get the passing going in midfield,
was Chris Wright.
Here are a few
excerpts from the Brixington match report with reference to West
Hill
'but West hill are not to be forgotten as their
defence is very strong'.
'the ball keeps getting to Arnold Godbeer up front
who took some shots on goal but West Hill's goalie (Rabbie - ed) was
always on the ball and saved it each time and the West Hill defence was
like a brick wall, very hard to penetrate'.
'Great work from both teams made this a great match
to watch'.
